Why is this scheme costing so much money?

Building high standard healthcare environments such as hospitals is always expensive. This is because they must comply with lots of technical and clinical standards. There is a great deal of high-tech equipment needed such as MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) and CT (Computerised Tomography) scanners, and we will also need our hospitals to be at the forefront of digital technology.

We will, of course, seek to deliver value for money for the communities we serve, and we will need to prove this and account for our spend.

At this early stage we think the whole programme could cost £1.3bn or more, to achieve. There is a range of potential opportunities, a prospectus of options, within the Programme Business Case. This offers a fantastic opportunity for investment in business and jobs in mid and south-west Wales as this level of investment has not been seen in this area before. This would benefit not only those of us here today, but also the generations to follow.
