Endoscopy

Endoscopy has returned to 87% of its pre COVID activity with restrictions on LFD testing removed. Work continues to improve capacity which is currently restricted by staffing issues. Urgent Suspected Cancer (USC) and very urgent patients are being offered appointments across the Health Board to help with timeliness. The Endoscopy service has reviewed the length of wait for endoscopy and is now dating longest wait routine and surveillance patients.

Procedures currently being undertaken per hospital as of above date:

Glangwili Hospital

  • Upper and lower endoscopy lists
  • Bowel Screening Wales lists
  • Bronchoscopy lists
  • Flexible cystoscopy lists
  • Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP)

Prince Philip Hospital

  • Upper and lower endoscopy lists
  • Bowel screening lists for Swansea Bay
  • Bronchoscopy lists
  • Flexible cystoscopy lists

Withybush Hospital

  • Upper and lower endoscopy lists
  • Bowel Screening Wales list

Bronglais Hospital

  • Upper and lower endoscopy lists
  • Bowel Screening Wales list
  • Endoscopic Retrograde Choliangiopancreatography (ERCP)
  • Cystoscopy

We continue with FIT testing with a low conversation rate going on to having an endoscopy procedure. Work continues to introduce FIT test to primary care to help the patient’s pathway to secondary care treatment.

Future plans

If capacity allows, reduce the length of wait for urgent, routine and surveillance patients.

Validation of all patients currently on the surveillance pathway and clinically prioritised as per national guidelines.
