What effect has the night-time closure of the MIU had on patients and other hospitals?

  • The demand for Urgent and Emergency Care services has stayed about the same between Nov–Dec 2023 and Nov–Dec 2024.
  • Fewer people are going to Prince Philip Hospital MIU, (mainly because it’s closed overnight).
  • PPH Acute Medical Assessment Unit (which provides emergency care for very sick adult medical patients, such as those who have suffered a stroke or heart attack) is seeing about the same number of patients as before.
  • The number of serious cases coming to Prince Philip Hospital  MIU has gone down.
  • Waiting times in Prince Philip Hospital MIU have improved a little, and most patients from Llanelli haven’t seen any increase in wait times at Glangwili Hospital
  • Fewer people are waiting over 4 or 12 hours in Prince Philip Hospital MIU.

Phone calls to NHS 111 Wales, where people can get advice on self-care or where to access care from, show:

  • A slight rise in overall calls since the temporary change.
  • A small drop in 111 calls being sent to Prince Philip Hospital MIU, which makes sense since it’s closed overnight.
  • More 111 calls being sent to 999 or emergency departments, likely because serious cases that used to go to Prince Philip  MIU at night are going elsewhere.
  • No increase in Llanelli patients going to Morriston Hospital.
