Every year, the Director of Public Health at Hywel Dda University Health Board is asked to write an Annual Report. This may focus on one area of public health, or take a wider view on population health and well-being across the Health Board area. Sadly, the Director of Public Health, Ros Jervis, passed away at the beginning of June 2022 after a short battle with cancer. The focus of this year’s DPH Annual Report is therefore a tribute to the leadership during her time with the Health Board since 2017, and the wonderful legacy that she leaves which will guide our ambitions to improve population health and well-being in the future.
The 2021 Annual Report focuses on health inequalities in Hywel Dda and highlights the way in which organisations and communities have been working together to reduce the gap between the most and least deprived parts of the health board area. It also highlights the way in which the COVID-19 pandemic has worked synergistically to exacerbate the inequalities across the health board footprint.
This report provides an overview of existing health inequalities in Hywel Dda and describes what they are, who experiences them and why they are a priority. The direct and indirect effects of COVID-19 are also described and consideration is given to what we, as a health board, in partnership with other statutory and voluntary organisations are already doing to deliver an organisational and community response to the COVID-19 pandemic and how these approaches have at their core an intention to reduce inequalities and promote health equity.
