Additional communication support

Relay UK

If you are Deaf, deaf and hard of hearing or speech-impaired, you can use the national relay service. Relay UK is an easy-to-use service which helps deaf, speech-impaired, and hearing people talk to each other over the phone using the relay service.

You can find out more about Relay UK by visiting their webpage here (opens in new tab). If you need to contact one of our offices using this text relay service, dial 18001 before the telephone number you wish to connect to.

Language interpreter support

If you require a BSL or any other language interpreter for your appointment or are concerned that an interpreter may not have been booked, please contact the department providing your appointment. Please note, all interpreting and translation requests must be made on your behalf by Hywel Dda University Health Board.

Other communication and information support

Under the Equality Act 2010 you have the right to accessible communication and information whenever you use our healthcare services.

To be able to help you provide the right support:

  • Tell doctors, nurses, paramedics and other health professionals how you want staff to communicate with you;
  • Ask to receive information in an accessible format including British Sign Language (BSL) or your preferred language, large print, audio, electronic or Braille;
  • Share your concerns with your GP surgery or hospital if the information you receive is not accessible to you.

Tell us your experience by contacting our Patient Support Service here (opens in new tab).
