Emergency departments

When to visit an emergency department

Please call 999 if you, or someone with you, is experiencing a life-threatening emergency or has experienced a major trauma.

Emergency departments (also known as A&E) treat emergency and life-threatening conditions and are for the most seriously ill or injured patients.

Before you attend, please consider if another service can provide the care you need.

Our emergency departments are located at Bronglais, Glangwili, and Withybush hospitals. They are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

You may experience long waits as we prioritise the most unwell and severely injured patients. For up-to-date waiting times for the emergency department in your area, please visit My A&E Live - NHS Wales Accident and Emergency Departments (opens in new tab).

Emergencies include, but are not limited to:

  • Chest pain or difficulties breathing
  • Signs of a stroke
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Severe loss of blood
  • Choking
  • Fitting/convulsions
  • Drowning
  • Severe allergic reactions.

Thank you for treating our staff with kindness. We do not tolerate violence or abuse of any kind towards our staff.

Help us help you

Are you unsure if an emergency department is suitable for your needs?  Information on alternative services available in Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire can be found on our Help us help you webpage here (opens in new tab).

Sometimes people go to an emergency department when their illness or injury is not a medical or life-threatening emergency.

You will be advised if your illness or injury can be dealt with by another healthcare service locally.  You will also be provided with information on how to access the service(s) that are more appropriate for your needs.

This will help us keep the service for the most unwell and severely injured people.
