Cardiac Diagnostics

We provide a range of tests that help diagnose heart conditions and determine how your heart is functioning. You will have been referred to us by your GP or a practitioner within secondary care.

We will send you an appointment letter which will often include information explaining what the test is for and what to expect during your appointment. In most cases the results of your test will be sent back to the person that referred you to us, we will not give you your results. If you are not sure who this is, please ask us before or during your appointment.

For some appointments such as valve surveillance clinic or pacemaker clinic, we will share the results with you and discuss with you how they affect your care.

If you require an interpreter or chaperone for your appointment or have any special requirements whilst visiting the hospital, please let us know by phone or email before your appointment.

We have a cardiac diagnostic department at each of our four hospitals but not all tests are provided at every hospital. We will try to arrange your test to be at the hospital nearest to where you live. If you are not sure that we have chosen the right hospital for you then please check the information below or contact us by phone or email.

Sometimes you can access an appointment sooner if you are prepared to travel further for your test. Click here to visit the British heart foundation website for more information on the tests we offer (opens in new tab)

Who will you see during your appointment?

When you visit us, you will usually be seen by a clinical physiologist or clinical scientist, or our science assistants. For some of our tests a doctor or an advanced practitioner will be present. You can expect the person you see to introduce themselves and tell you their job role.

Our clinical physiologist or scientist wear a black uniform.

Our science assistants wear a red uniform.

We are continually training future clinical physiologists and scientists so your test may be performed by a trainee. All our trainees are supervised. This may mean that they are directly supervised and taught during your appointment, or that their work analysing and reporting your test result is supervised or checked.
