Children's services - when should I dial 999?

If your child is seriously unwell or seriously injured please call 999. Do this if your child has any of the following:

  • Becomes pale, mottled, and feels abnormally cold to the touch
  • Has pauses in their breathing (apnoeas), has an irregular breathing pattern, or starts grunting. Click here for information about grunting (opens in new tab)
  • Severe difficulty in breathing becoming agitated or unresponsive
  • Is going blue round the lips
  • Has a fit/seizure
  • Becomes extremely distressed (crying inconsolably despite distraction), confused, very lethargic (difficult to wake) or unresponsive
  • Develops a rash that does not disappear with pressure (the 'glass test') Click here for information about the 'Glass test' (opens in new tab)
  • Has testicular pain, especially in teenage boys

Currently there are two hospitals within Hywel Dda UHB - Bronglais Hospital, Aberystwyth; and Glangwili Hospital, Carmarthen - which have Emergency Departments with co-located paediatric hospital services and specialists on-site; and where children with serious illnesses or injuries can be treated.

This means, until 2022 when there will be a review, Withybush Hospital, Haverfordwest, will only see children with minor injuries, or through booked outpatient appointments.

Children with serious illnesses or injuries will be seen at either Bronglais Hospital or Glangwili Hospital.
