Endoscopy - further information

We strive to provide the best care possible to all patients attending the endoscopy units.

Direct referrals from primary care are evaluated and if appropriate offered Faecal Immunochemical test (FIT), CT scan and/or endoscopy.

We will send you full information of any preparation you need to make with your appointment letter or explain it over the telephone.

You may be required to fast for a period of time before your procedure, for colonoscopy/flexible sigmoidoscopy you may need to take a bowel cleansing medicine, if you would like your procedure under sedation you will need to arrange for an escort to take you home and stay with you overnight.

The bowel cancer screening programme offers screening every two years to all men and women aged 58 to 74 who are registered with a GP. The screening programme aims to detect bowel cancer at an early stage in people with no symptoms, when treatment is likely to be more effective.
