Your GP General Practitioner (GP) surgery is the first place you turn when you’re feeling unwell or need health advice. A GP or a member of their team can assess your symptoms, provide treatment for a wide range of conditions. They can also refer you to specialist care if needed.
GP surgeries have teams of skilled healthcare professionals working together to provide you with the best care. This means you won't always need to see a doctor.

Depending on your needs, the surgery will direct you to the most appropriate healthcare professional. They could be the practice nurse, district nurse, pharmacist, mental health practitioner, children's health service or dietician among other care providers. These professionals can be based either at the surgery or at community-based wellbeing centres.
When you contact your GP surgery, you will speak to a trained member of the team who will ask you a few confidential questions. This helps them understand your concern and direct you to the right healthcare professional. Depending on your needs, you might be offered a phone or video appointment, or to be seen in person.
