Going to the Minor Injury Unit - Prince Philip Hospital

The hospitals are busy because of Coronavirus, the hospital might look different to what it normally does. You will not be able to go into some areas of the hospital, this is to make sure that the virus does not spread so easily.

You may need to come to hospital because you are hurt or are unwell, an ambulance might take you there, or if you come by car, park in the blue car park and follow the signs.

Press the buzzer on the wall, someone will answer. A nurse will ask you questions to make sure that you do not have coronavirus:

Have you had a cough? Have you been short of breath? Have you had a fever?

If the nurse does not think that you have the coronavirus the door will open. Go to the reception desk to book in.

You will be called to a small room called a triage room. The nurse will ask you more questions about why you have come to the Minor Injury Unit.

The nurse will then ask you to wait in the waiting room, do not sit on the seats that are taped off. This is to make sure that people do not sit too close  This helps stop the coronavirus from spreading. You will then be seen by a Doctor or a Nurse and get the treatment you need.

If after you have pressed the buzzer the nurse is worried that you might have coronavirus the door will not open. You will be asked to go to the porta cabin next door.

Go into the porta cabin and you will be taken to a room. The nurse or doctor will do a swab test, the results of the swab test for the coronavirus will be sent to you in a few days.

The nurse or doctor will wear a mask, apron and gloves, which they call PPE, this is to help to protect you from the coronavirus. Don’t be scared that the nurse or doctor is wearing the mask, apron and gloves, it is to protect you from the coronavirus. This is the same nurse without the PPE (mask, gloves and apron).

If you have have a high temperature, a cough, or shortness of breath you will be given a mask to wear. The nurse or doctor will give you advice and will ask you to go home.

If you are very unwell the nurse or doctor will ask you to stay in hospital. You will be taken to the Acute Medical Assessment Unit (AMAU), this is the best place for you to be to get better if you are unwell.
