Referrals

How do I get referred?

We currently only accept referrals from a professional (usually your GP).

I have sent in a referral - what happens next?

Each referral received is screened by a clinician. This means that referrals are carefully read, and a decision made on whether to accept you onto our waiting list. If you are eligible, you will receive a letter confirming this. Please allow us some time to do this, as we are a small administrative team.

How long will I have to wait for my assessment?

Our waiting list is lengthy, and we currently have limited resources. Due to this it is difficult to predict when you will be seen.

There are lots of useful resources online which you can access with regards to Adult ADHD. You can educate yourself about ADHD as well as other neurodevelopmental conditions. It is important to also know about others e.g. autism spectrum disorder, communication disorders.

Learning about the condition is considered an important part of the treatment pathway (see below).

How long will I have to wait to start treatment?

Unfortunately, this is also difficult to give a specific timescale. The process of reaching an optimum and stable dose of ADHD medication can take months. We are only a small team, therefore there is a limited number of individuals we can treat safely at any one time.

We must closely monitor for side effects during the process. We must especially keep an eye on increase in blood pressure and pulse rates, or any changes in your mood or appetite.

There are several factors that can slow the treatment process down, including unwanted side effects, or alternative options needing to be explored. It is important to note, that for some individuals, ADHD medication has no benefit.
