What happens after an ADHD diagnosis

After receiving an ADHD diagnosis an appointment will be made with our specialist nurse for further advice and support. This will include education about ADHD, suggestions for managing your symptoms and signposting to useful services online and in your local area.

ADHD should be managed with a holistic treatment plan which considers psychological, behavioural and educational or occupational needs. Parenting strategies are a key part of helping children and young people manage their ADHD, and there are a number of parenting courses and workshops available. Lifestyle changes such as healthy diet and regular exercise are an important part of ADHD treatment.

With your consent we will let the child/young person's school know that they have received this new diagnosis. This will mean that the appropriate support is put in place in their educational setting.

For some individuals’ medication is an important part of managing their ADHD symptoms. Not everyone with ADHD benefits from medication, particularly if there are other causes for their symptoms such as autism or anxiety.

If medication is deemed appropriate, your doctor will discuss all the important information and considerations with you. You will have appointments with both the doctor and specialist nurse whilst finding the right medication and dose, which can take a few months. We must closely monitor side effects during this process.

We watch over the growth of the child/young person (weight and height), any changes to blood pressure or pulse and any changes in mood or appetite. There are several factors that can slow the treatment process down, including unwanted side effects or alternative options needing to be explored. Additionally, medication may not be required with the right support mechanisms in place as part of the holistic treatment plan.

Once a patient is established on a stable dose of medication, they will require a clinic appointment every six months. Attendance at clinic is essential to receive continued prescriptions and ensures the safety of your child/young person.
