Pharmacists and independent prescribers

Pharmacists have expert knowledge of medicines and health. They can help patients on the safe use of medicines and providing excellent healthcare advice. Pharmacists can also provide a range of care. They work closely with other healthcare professionals, such as doctors to deliver care in your local pharmacy.

Many pharmacists are training to become independent prescribers. This would enable them to prescribe medications for things like ear infections, sore throats, UTIs or contraception.

They will assess your condition within a community pharmacy in a private consultation room. They will prescribe medication where appropriate, without the need for you to make an appointment with a GP.
