What is Long Term Care?

‘Long term care’ is care which people need over an long period of time. This may be because of illness, disability, or an accident. It supports both their physical and mental health needs.

It may require services from the NHS and/or social care. It can be provided in a range of settings, such as:

  • An NHS hospital.
  • A care home (either residential or nursing care).
  • A hospice.
  • In a person’s own home.
