Radiology
Our team of Consultant Radiologist, Radiographers, Sonographers and Assistant Practitioners carry out imaging examinations that help with diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of disease and injury.
The Radiology department offers a range of imaging examinations such as:
- Plain x-rays;
- computerised tomography (CT) scanning;
- ultrasound;
- radioactive isotope imaging (RNI);
- magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
Our normal working hours are Monday to Friday 8:45am - 5.00pm across all four of our hospitals. However, we are open 24 hours for emergencies that come through emergency departments, minor injury units and the hospital wards.

You can be referred to Radiology by a doctor, consultant or other healthcare professional (nurse practitioner, podiatrist or physiotherapist).
Walk-in service – plain x-ray
If you require a plain X-ray and your GP has given you a form, we offer a walk-in service. If you have been given a paper referral form, please ensure you bring this with you.

Monday to Friday, 08:30am to 7:30pm
CT, MRI, RNI and Ultrasound
If you require a routine CT, MRI or Ultrasound scan, we will receive a referral from your doctor, consultant or healthcare professional. Once we have your referral it will be assessed, and appointment letter will be sent out to you in the post depending on the clinical urgency.
Service update
From Monday 3 August 2026, x-ray services will no longer be provided at Llandovery and South Pembrokeshire hospitals.
Patients who require an x-ray will continue to be able to access services at all four of Hywel Dda’s main hospitals: Bronglais in Aberystwyth, Glangwili in Carmarthen, Prince Philip in Llanelli, and Withybush in Haverfordwest. Patients needing an x-ray will need to follow the advice provided by the healthcare professional.
24/7 emergency diagnostic radiology services will continue to be provided at all four main hospitals across Hywel Dda.
Why this is changing
Changes to x-ray services at Llandovery and South Pembrokeshire hospitals are part of decisions approved by the Health Board in February 2026, following the Clinical Services Plan public consultation. Radiology needs to change due to a significant increase in demand across all hospitals, staffing shortages that limit the ability to provide services over longer hours and several locations, and challenges in maintaining up-to-date equipment across multiple sites.
The imaging equipment at Llandovery Hospital has been unavailable since December 2025, following the implementation of a nationally mandated upgrade to the Radiology IT system. We recognise the impact this has had locally and appreciate the patience and understanding shown by the community. Also, the contract for the processing equipment currently on site at Llandovery Hospital and South Pembrokeshire ended on 31 July
Future radiology services
The Board approved a new model for radiology services that keeps planned diagnostic and day case interventional radiology Monday to Friday at Bronglais Hospital. Over time, planned diagnostics will move to a seven-day service at Prince Philip and Withybush, which will also deliver weekday inpatient and day case interventional radiology. Glangwili will continue to focus on inpatient interventional radiology only. The changes will support quicker diagnosis and create a dedicated cancer focus at Prince Philip and Withybush hospitals.
The Health Board will continue to work with clinical and operational colleagues to implement the agreed changes for Radiology. This includes developing seven‑day routine diagnostics, with a cancer focus, at Withybush and Prince Philip, and responding to urgent needs in the service.
Recognising the scale and complexity of the Clinical Services Plan programme, changes will be introduced in phases over several years. We will continue to engage with local communities and keep patients informed as changes are implemented.
