Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP)
Pre-exposure prophylaxis also known as PrEP, is a medicine that helps stop people from getting HIV.
If you are taking PrEP, please take as recommended by our healthcare professionals. PrEP is different to PEP, which is a medicine that is taken after sex to prevent the risk of catching HIV. In that, you take PrEP in preparation for sex, rather than PEP when you take after as an emergency.
When will I need PrEP
PrEP is recommended for people at higher risk of catching HIV.
In the UK, this is often men who have sex with other men, especially if they do not always use condoms during sex.
PrEP can also be helpful if you have had sex with partners who might have a higher chance of having HIV but do not know it. This can include having sex with:
- Men who have sex with men
- People from parts of the world where HIV is more common

Where can I get PrEP?
PrEP is available at our clinics. If you think you might need it, please call us on 01267 248674.
We will check if PrEP is right for you, this means we will look at how likely you are to get HIV. We will also make sure PrEP is safe for you to take. This helps us check for any reasons why you should not use PrEP.
