The development of a health and wellbeing centre in the Cross Hands area is part of how we move care closer to home for our communities. The move to provide care this way is part of our long term strategy for 'A Healthier Mid and West Wales'. The aim of the Cross Hands Health and Wellbeing Centre is to provide a base for health and wellbeing services across the Amman Gwendraeth area.
Current plans include accommodation for two local GP practices, Amman Tawe Partnership and Penygroes Surgery, alongside a range of community, primary care and mental health services.
Hywel Dda University Health Board is leading the project alongside local GP practices, Dyfed-Powys Police and Carmarthenshire County Council.
Subject to Welsh Government approval, the new centre will be located adjacent to the A48 and the Cross Hands Business Park.
The development meets our goal to provide fit for purpose, modern facilities and services.
The development of Cross Hands Health and Wellbeing Centre is in line with our plans to take a Community by Design approach, as outlined in our refreshed long-term strategy ‘A Healthier mid and west Wales - Healthier lives, well lived’. You can read the strategy document here (opens in new tab).
The aim of our strategy is to offer more care closer to where you live by providing services in the community first and only in the hospital when it can’t be provided closer to home. More care will take place in communities and people’s homes. We will aim to give people help earlier, before problems become more serious. This means spotting issues sooner, offering support in communities, and preventing avoidable illness or crisis. Earlier support helps people stay well for longer, reduces the need for hospital care, and improves overall health and wellbeing.
Current plans include accommodation for two local GP practices, Amman Tawe Partnership and Penygroes Surgery, alongside a range of community, primary care and mental health services.
The project aims to positively impact the health and wellbeing of present and future generations living in and around the Amman Gwendraeth area.
The current site plot considered is located next to the A48 along the eastern edge, along the newly developed road known as the Cross Hands West development.
Initial community engagement events were undertaken in 2019 and the project's Outline Business Case (OBC) was subsequently approved by Welsh Government in 2023.
In line with Welsh Government guidance, Hywel Dda reviewed the cost of the development in 2024, following increases in construction costs, inflationary pressures, changes to building requirements and additional decarbonisation measures affecting healthcare developments across Wales.
The Health Board continues to work closely with Welsh Government and project partners on plans for the centre. Following confirmation of Welsh Government funding in March 2026 to develop a business case, the project moved into the next phase of design development and service planning. This stage of the project is focused on preparing the Full Business Case (FBC) for Welsh Government consideration.
Timescales remain subject to the successful approval of the Full Business Case (FBC) and other statutory approvals, with construction anticipated to begin in 2028.
The health board will continue to engage with our communities regarding this development including the timeline for opening.
We want to continue to engage, with patients, public, staff, and partners.
If you have not already done so, we would encourage you to be part of our scheme Siarad Iechyd /Talking Health (opens in new tab) where you can be kept up to date on any changes in services. You will also be contacted with news about the development of our strategy for a Healthier Mid and West Wales.
Updates are also provided at our Health Board meetings. You can attend these Board meetings as they are held in public or you can watch them online here (opens in new tab).
