Freestanding midwifery units (FMUs)

Freestanding midwifery units are birth centres on a separate site from your nearest hospital with an obstetric unit. Midwives take responsibility foryour care during labour and support you to have a spontaneous vaginal birth. If you or your baby need specialist care or you decide to have an epidural or additional drugs for pain relief, you will need to be transferred to an obstetric unit, which may be several miles away. Transfer is usually by ambulance.
