Paediatric occupational therapy - how to get referred

Guidelines and request for help criteria

It is recommended that this information is considered before you complete the request for help form.

Before completing a request for help

  • Please consider the developmental level of your child/young person in relation to the areas of concern. You should consider whether the skills of your child/young person are out of line with their overall level of development. For example, if your child is 10 years old but their learning age is 5 years old (a global learning delay). Then you would expect all their daily living skills and abilities to be at the same level as a 5 year old. If this is the case, the occupational therapy service is unlikely to be able to improve your child’s skills. Instead, we would advise you to support your child’s learning at a level that they understand.
  • Is the timing of the request good for the child/young person and family? There is an expectation that the people closest to the child will carry out any recommendations or programmes made by the occupational therapist. Please request support when the family are ready and available to take on this commitment.
  • Usually the first assessment is carried out over the telephone so please ensure all the numbers are correct and that you have stated any communication or language needs. Please also include an email address.
  • Requests may be returned if more information is needed.
