Head and neck cancer

Following a confirmed diagnosis of head and neck cancer, specialist speech and language therapists play a unique and essential role. We will assess, diagnose and manage communication, speech, voice and swallowing problems. Our job is to provide advice and support before, during and after treatment.

Treatments for these cancers may include surgery (such as voice box removal – a “laryngectomy”), radiotherapy, chemo-radiotherapy, or a combination of treatments. These commonly can affect a person’s ability to speak, use their voice, swallow, smell and breathe, significantly affecting quality of life.

If left unsupported, these difficulties can also affect a person’s ability to participate in everyday activities. We are part of a skilled specialist team and work together to help all our patients through their cancer journey.
