The development of a health and well-being centre in the Cross Hands area is part of how we move care closer to home for our communities. The move to provide care this way is part of our long term strategy for 'A Healthier Mid and West Wales'. Frequently asked questions

The aim of the Cross Hands Health and Well-being Centre is to provide a base for health and care services, accommodating primary and community health services including two GP practices.

The health board is leading the project in partnership with Carmarthenshire County Council and two local GP practices: Penygroes and Amman Tawe Partnership. Amman Tawe Partnership took over the General Medical Services (GMS) contract on 1 April 2024.

Recognising the specific needs of the area, the development will provide a ‘hub’ for information, advice and assistance to support and empower the local population to manage their well-being needs. Adopting this approach and targeting wider aspects that affect people's health will provide a valuable contribution to improving the health and well-being of the present and future generations living in the Amman Gwendraeth locality.

The development of Cross Hands Health and Well-being Centre is in line with our plans to adopt a social model of health as outlined in our long-term strategy ‘A Healthier Mid and West Wales: Our Future Generations Living Well’. You can read the strategy document here (opens in new tab).

The aim of our strategy is to improve population health through prevention and early intervention, planning and delivering services to enable people to participate in social solutions for well-being, as well as healthcare.  We want to do this by transforming our communities through collaboration with people, communities and partners.

The centre will also address weaknesses within the current facilities, such as deteriorating buildings, cramped working conditions, and capacity constraints.

It is envisaged that the centre will provide a base for health and care services, accommodating community health services, GP practices, a library service, community police support officers and voluntary and third sector groups.

The project seeks to offer a sustainable solution for the continued provision of primary care and community services, thereby positively impacting the health and well-being of present and future generations living in and around the Amman Gwendraeth area.

The current site plot considered is located next to the A48 along the eastern edge, along the newly developed road known as the Cross Hands West development.

The outline business case for the Cross Hands health and well-being centre was approved by Welsh Government in January 2023. Since the original outline business case submission, there has been an increase in the anticipated capital costs. The increased cost for this development is as a result of issues such as inflation, build costs, regulatory changes to building specifications as well as the provision of additional decarbonisation measures.

We are currently reviewing costs for the development of the Cross Hands Health and Well-being Centre, ahead of a submission of a Full Business Case (FBC) proposal to Welsh Government.

The health board will continue to engage with our communities regarding this development including the timeline for opening.

We want to continue to engage, with patients, public, staff, and partners.

If you have not already done so, we would encourage you to be part of our scheme Siarad Iechyd /Talking Health (opens in new tab) where you can be kept up to date on any changes in services. You will also be contacted with news about the development of our strategy for a Healthier Mid and West Wales.

Updates are also provided at our Health Board meetings. You can attend these Board meetings as they are held in public or you can watch them online here (opens in new tab)
