Public consultation on future of Minor Injury Unit at Prince Philip Hospital concludes

The twelve-week public consultation seeking views on the future options for the Minor Injury Unit (MIU) at Prince Philip Hospital in Llanelli has now closed.

Launched on 28 April 2025, the consultation invited views on four potential long-term options for the MIU, as well as any alternative suggestions from the community. Over the course of the consultation, 729 questionnaire responses were received from members of the public, staff, and stakeholders, in addition to the hundreds of conversations held with individuals.

Mark Henwood, Executive Medical Director, said: “Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to share their views. This has been a valuable and engaging consultation, and we’ve heard a wide range of perspectives and ideas.”

Over the past twelve weeks, hundreds of people engaged through drop-in events, online meetings, and community discussions. The Health Board also met directly with patients and staff at the hospital to gather feedback.

Mark continues: “We are now entering a period of conscientious consideration where we carefully review and consider all the feedback received, including any alternative options put forward, before presenting a report to our Board for a decision. We anticipate that the final report will be shared at the September meeting of the public Board, once all the feedback has been considered.”

The MIU has been operating under temporary opening hours of 8am to 8pm daily since November 2024, due to staffing challenges and to ensure patient and staff safety. The consultation focused specifically on services for the minor injury unit, which treats conditions such as cuts, grazes, sprains, and minor fractures, and how these are delivered in Llanelli in the future. The consultation does not include the Acute Medical Assessment Unit (AMAU) at Prince Philip Hospital, which continues to provide emergency care for seriously ill adult patients.
