Phlebotomy services (blood tests) for Hywel Dda University Health Board patients living in the Llanelli area will be moving to a new home at Canolfan Pentre Awel, Llanelli on 1 June 2026.
The service is currently provided from the Mass Vaccination Centre in Dafen, Llanelli, where it temporarily relocated to in 2024.
This marks the next planned step in improving access and experience for patients in Llanelli and the surrounding area.
On 20 May 2026, the Health Board will be holding a drop-in event at Canolfan Pentre Awel where residents can find out more about the phlebotomy service move to Canolfan Pentre Awel. The drop in will be held between 2pm and 6pm
Canolfan Pentre Awel, which opened to the public in October 2025, offers improved accessibility, transport links, and more convenient parking for patients. In February 2026, a new hydrotherapy pool opened for patients, marking a significant milestone in the delivery of high-quality, integrated health and wellbeing services for the region. This was made possible thanks to the partnership between Carmarthenshire County Council, Hywel Dda University Health Board and charitable donations from the Llanelli Hydrotherapy Pool Committee and the Elizabeth Williams Endowment. Funding also came from the national charity Treat Trust Wales and the Welsh Government.
The phlebotomy team will share the space with the Health Board’s Research and Innovation services, Tritech. A range of bookable clinical rooms are also available.
Dylan Jones, Head of Pathology Services at Hywel Dda, said: “We are very pleased to be moving the Llanelli Phlebotomy Service to Canolfan Pentre Awel. This new facility offers a bright, accessible environment with excellent transport routes and parking, which we know is important to our patients.
“Working alongside colleagues in Research and Innovation, as well as other clinical teams, will also provide improved working conditions for staff and a more seamless experience for patients.
“This move represents a positive and long‑term investment in the quality of services we provide to the Llanelli community.”
For patients travelling by public transport the L1 and L2 local bus route connects Canolfan Pentre Awel to key locations with the bus stop near the main door. The route, which operates around every 90 minutes, connects Llanelli town centre, Parc Pemberton, Parc Trostre, Penyfan, Morfa, Canolfan Pentre Awel, Swiss Valley, Prince Philip Hospital and Felinfoel.
The L11 route is available for those living in Kidwelly and the surrounding areas at the start and end of each day.
Sara Quarrie, Service Director for Allied Health Professions and Health Sciences at Hywel Dda, said: “The move of our Phlebotomy Service to Canolfan Pentre Awel marks an exciting step forward for patients in Llanelli. This new, modern facility has been designed to support high‑quality care, improve accessibility, and create a welcoming environment for everyone who uses our services.
“We know how important it is for local people to have a service that is easy to get to and meets their needs, and the team has worked hard to ensure this move delivers real benefits for both patients and staff.
“We look forward to welcoming our community to the new site and continuing to provide a safe, efficient and patient‑centred service as part of the wider development at Pentre Awel.”
Carmarthenshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Leisure, Culture and Tourism, Cllr Hazel Evans said:
“I am pleased to see Canolfan Pentre Awel being used for its intended purpose, by offering frontline medical health care services to our community in a more accessible location”.
