Midwives across Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire celebrated their profession this week, marking International Day of the Midwife (5 May 2026).
There are over 251 midwives working within Hywel Dda University Health Board who deliver care with skill, dedication and compassion every day. Midwives play a vital role in supporting women, babies and families through pregnancy, birth and the early postnatal period, often at some of the most important and emotional moments in their lives.
Sharon Daniel, the Health Board’s Director of Nursing, Quality and Patient Experience said: “We thank each and every one of our midwives for their hard work, care and expertise and for the real difference they make to women and families.
“They are at the forefront of our maternity services, providing safe, high‑quality, person‑centred care and driving improvements, often in complex and challenging circumstances. Their contribution is invaluable, and it is truly appreciated.”
Skilled midwifery care improves outcomes for women and babies, supports positive birth experiences and helps build stronger, healthier families. Midwives bring specialist knowledge, advocacy and continuity of care, supporting both physical and emotional wellbeing throughout the maternity journey.
Reflecting on her experience, local mum Amy, from Carmarthenshire said: “In the moment that mattered most, you brought our child safely into the world. Baby Luca’s story will always begin with your care, and for that, we will be forever grateful.”
Jade, from Carmarthenshire also shared her experience, commenting: “Such a positive experience with Hywel Dda maternity services. Everyone was so kind and professional and made our birthing experience very special.”
The International Confederation of Midwives, which represents midwives across the world, has chosen 5 May each year to celebrate the profession and raise awareness of the essential role midwives play in health and care systems globally.
