Have your say on the future of New Quay Surgery services

12 October 2026

Patients and the local community are being encouraged to have their say on the future delivery of general medical services currently provided by New Quay Surgery’s GP Partners.

Today (Monday 12 October), Hywel Dda University Health Board has launched an eight-week public engagement period to hear people’s views before a final decision is made. The engagement will remain open until Sunday 6 December 2026.

The engagement follows the decision by New Quay Surgery’s GP Partners to resign the practice’s General Medical Services (GMS) contract. The current contract will end on 31 March 2027, and the Health Board is considering how services will be provided after this date. New Quay Surgery remains open as normal in the meantime, and patients are being asked to remain registered with the practice.

A Vacant Practice Panel has considered a range of options for the future provision of services. Members of the Panel recommended that their preferred option is to undertake an urgent contract award through a procurement process to find and appoint a new provider of services from New Quay.

The Panel also agreed to consider the boundary areas of neighbouring GP practices. This will provide additional information should awarding a new contract not be possible and a managed dispersal of the patient list to other neighbouring practices needs to be considered as an alternative.

The option of the Health Board directly managing the practice was also considered but was not recommended at this stage because of the operational and financial risks associated with securing appropriate staffing including GPs to deliver safe and sustainable services.

No final decision has been made, and the Health Board wants patients, communities and other stakeholders to understand the options and share their views before the next stage of the process.

The engagement period runs from Monday 12 October to Sunday 6 December 2026. The Health Board will write to all patients registered with New Quay Surgery with paper copies of a questionnaire.

People can also share their views by:

The Health Board will also hold a public drop-in engagement event, where people can meet representatives, ask questions and provide feedback.

  • Date: Wednesday 11 November 2026
  • Time: 2pm – 7pm (drop in at any time)
  • Venue: New Quay Memorial Hall, Towyn Road, New Quay, Ceredigion, SA45 9QQ.

An online event will also be held on Tuesday 17 November at 6.30pm. Please email hyweldda.engagement@wales.nhs.uk to receive a link to the online event.

Andrew Carruthers, Chief Operating Officer at Hywel Dda University Health Board, said: “We fully recognise how important the services provided by New Quay Surgery are to patients and the wider community, and we understand that people will have questions and concerns about what happens after the current contract ends.

“The Vacant Practice Panel has carefully considered the options available, taking into account factors including patient safety, sustainability, financial viability, the geography of the area and the potential impact on patients. Its preferred option is to test whether another provider can be secured through an urgent contract award procurement process.

“However, no final decision has been made. This engagement is an important opportunity for patients and local communities to understand the options and tell us what they think. I would encourage people to take part and share their views with us before the engagement closes on Sunday 6 December.

“In the meantime, New Quay Surgery remains open as normal and we ask patients to remain registered with the practice.  We are grateful to the community for their ongoing support for the practice team through this challenging period.”

A paper is expected to be presented to the Health Board early next year setting out the outcomes of the engagement and procurement process and, where appropriate, alternative options for consideration.
