Health Board seeks views on future of nurse-led services in St Davids

Patients, residents and community stakeholders are being invited by Hywel Dda University Health Board to share their views on the future of nurse-led services at the branch surgery of Meddygfa Penrhyn in St Davids.

The engagement follows the Health Board receiving an application from Meddygfa Penrhyn to discontinue branch services in St Davids. The practice has advised that delivering services from a single site in Solva, 3.4miles away, would help provide more integrated care for patients, with GPs, nurses and administrative staff working together in one location.  

At the same time, the Health Board has received a notification that the current premises at Shalom House will no longer be available from 30 September due to the sale of the building and no suitable alternative premises have yet been identified. 

No decision has been made about continuing branch surgery services in St Davids and the Health Board is keen to hear from patients, carers and local residents before any recommendations are considered.

The engagement period will run from Monday 24 August to Friday 16 October and the Health Board will be writing to all patients to provide paper copies of the questionnaire. Views can also be shared in the following ways:

The Health Board will also hold a public drop-in engagement event where people can meet representatives, ask questions and provide feedback.

Andrew Carruthers, Chief Operating Officer at Hywel Dda University Health Board, said: "We recognise how important local healthcare services are to the people of St Davids and the surrounding communities.

“Before any decisions are made, we want to hear directly from patients, carers, residents and community groups about how they use these services and what impact any changes may have on them.

"This engagement is an opportunity for people to share their experiences, concerns and suggestions, helping us build a clear understanding of local needs. I would encourage anyone with an interest in these services to complete the questionnaire or attend our drop-in event so their views can be considered as part of the process.

“Alongside the discussion about these services, we also want to encourage a broader conversation about the future of health and wellbeing support within the community. Through our Community by Design programme, we are committed to working with communities to develop solutions that build on local strengths, improve connections between services and help people access the support they need.

“The views shared through this engagement will help inform not only our understanding of current services, but also future opportunities to develop more connected, community-focused approaches that support people to stay well closer to home."

The engagement will remain open until 16 October 2026. Feedback received by this date will be collated and presented to the Health Board ahead of a meeting in January 2027, when the recommendation will be considered.

Meddygfa Penrhyn remains open as usual, and clinics usually held at Shalom House will transfer to the practice in Solva.  Thank you to the community for their ongoing support for the team at Meddygfa Penrhyn.
