New location for children's speech and language services

Hywel Dda University Health Board is asking for feedback from families, service users, and staff on the potential impacts of moving its Paediatric Speech and Language Therapy clinic in Aberystwyth to a new location. 

The clinic supports children and young people from birth to 18 years old who have speech, language and communication needs. Around 90 families use the service at any one time. The service helps children with a range of needs, including speech and language difficulties, stammering, developmental language disorder, and social communication difficulties.

From mid-October, the service will be relocating from Pantyfedwen, Market Street, to Canolfan Rheidol, Rhodfa Padarn, Aberystwyth. As the lease on the current building is coming to an end, the service will need to move to its new location by 12 October 2026. The service joins other health services based at Canolfan Rheidol - Ceredigion County Council’s offices. Future plans for the service do not include operating from the existing building on Market Street.

The new location is around one mile from the current clinic and is within walking distance of the town centre. The service will continue to serve families across Aberystwyth and north Ceredigion.

Andrew Carruthers, Chief Operating Officer at Hywel Dda University Health Board said: “It’s important to highlight that this move will not involve any reduction in services, staffing levels or clinic appointments. Our clinics will continue to run as they do now.

“We want to hear from children, young people, parents, carers, staff and anyone with an interest in the service about how the change may impact you. Your feedback will help us understand any such impact and how we can address them.

“If families have an appointment with the Speech and Language Therapies team, we will be contacting you to let you know if the location of your appointment has changed.”

Canolfan Rheidol already hosts a number of health services and offers modern facilities, improved accessibility, on-site parking and access to public transport, including the T1 and T5 bus routes. The move will also bring the speech and language team closer to other services that support children and families.
