20 October 2026

We are currently managing a scabies outbreak on the Cadog and Dewi Wards at Glangwili General Hospital.

As a precaution, the wards are temporarily closed to new admissions and visitors from today, Tuesday 20 October. The situation is being reviewed regularly and the risk to the wider public remains low.

Scabies is a common skin condition caused by a microscopic mite and can affect people of all ages. While it is highly contagious through prolonged skin-to-skin contact or shared bedding or clothing, with partners and household members, it is not usually associated with serious illness and can be treated effectively. It is important to note that scabies is not linked to poor personal hygiene, and anyone can be affected.

Additional infection prevention measures and a co-ordinated treatment programme are in place to protect patients, staff and visitors and help prevent further spread.

Any patients who have recently been discharged from the wards will be contacted directly.

We recognise that additional precautions can be inconvenient for patients and families and thank everyone for their understanding and co-operation. Should you have any concerns please contact the wards directly.

The health, safety and wellbeing of our patients, visitors and staff is our priority. We are following national guidance and have taken additional steps to reduce the risk of infection spreading.
